Gambit spinoff to feature… Channing Tatum
A big name is coming to the big screen to play one of the more puckish rogues in the X-men universe. Channing Tatum has been confirmed to play Gambit, whose real name is Remy LeBeau, in an upcoming X-men spinoff featuring the Cajun who makes cards and other things explode.
According to Variety.com, “X-men: Days of Future Past” producer Lauren Shuler Donner dropped the news on the red carpet premiere in London.
“He’s a rogue, Channing — he’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. And he can handle the action, we all know that,” she told Total Film. “And he’s got a really good heart … I think he’ll be great for Gambit.”
Donner added, “And he’s a southerner too … he understands that world, and you know Gambit loves New Orleans.”
Tatum also says Gambit is the one X-man he’d ever wanted to be. “Gambit is the only X-Man I’ve ever loved,” he said to MTV previously. “I mean, I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, but I guess just being from down South; my dad’s from Louisiana, I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, Florida. I don’t know, I just related to him … I would die to play him.”
Gambit joins Wolverine in getting his own spin-off. The first Wolverine spin-off, sold as an origins story, was widely trashed by critics and fans alike, but “The Wolverine,” the second spin-off did a little better among them. Deadpool is also slated to get a spinoff, though most fans really, really hope that, even if Ryan Reynolds plays him again, he is written to be a much better character.
There are also calls for a Jennifer Lawrence-led spin-off for Mystique.
