The Artist Speaks: An Interview with Andrew Heath

Posted July 11, 2013 by

If you are reading this, Andrew Heath has created art inspired by a TV show or a movie that you like. The variety of his designs cover a multitude of subjects in pop culture, and he’s just getting started in the field. TheNerdyBomb had the opportunity to speak with this future nerd art star and asked him a few questions.

What inspired you to do this type of art?

Last year they announced the Lexington Comic Convention and I thought, there’s going to be a comic convention. Why not make some cool prints of things I like. I took them there, and it just exploded.

What was your background?

Graphic Design and Art Studio

What was the first piece you did?

Pac-man Food Pyramid.

What’s your Favorite Piece?

I like different pieces for different reasons.  But probably Ghostbusters.  It’s my all time favorite movie.

What’s the strangest request you’ve had from someone?

Someone wanted a commission and they wanted me to do a piece that combined the Ryan Gosling movie “Drive” and the movie “Congo”, with the apes.

Also, a man from China emailed me and wanted me to do illustrations for a line of designer men’s underwear.

So, it was essentially a modern day version of  “Underoos” for the Chinese male?

So do you have a full time job working for the man?

I did, but this has taken off so well that I do conventions and free lance work, and was able to quit my old job in January.

Are you an avid comic book reader?

Not really, I do read some graphic novels.  I grew up collecting comics, but I did it more for the pictures than the story.

What is the best advice you’ve received in regards to your work?

I kinda made up my best advice. And that’s to take risks. I’m 24, I’m at the age where I can take risks while I don’t have a kids or a house. Also, spend money to make money.  As an artist though, get a website. Having an online presence is really important.

If you could have one superpower what would it be?

I’d like to fly.  Flying would be pretty cool.  Or, regeneration? Have you ever seen that show Heroes? I started watching that, and regeneration would be pretty cool.

So you want to be a cheerleader?

Yes, I want to be a cheerleader.

What are three things you couldn’t live without?

My computer and the whole internet thing.

Entertainment and movies that sort of thing.

And absolutely my girlfriend!

Well that’s a good segue into my next question, Who is your best friend?

No, no. She knows this.  She’s like my “best friend”. But my “real best friend” is Jason, we went to school together.

In regards to entertainment, what’s your guilty pleasure?

Old cartoons. Like Batman Beyond. That show has really held up well.

What’s the worst part of your job?

Getting up out of bed and having my office one room away.  I have the choice to just lay there and not walk down the hall.

And the best part?

Getting up out of bed and walking down the hall to work.

Of all your work so far, what work are you most proud of?

I did a “Super 8” poster for a gallery show in L.A. That one just really looks like it fits with the movie. I really like it. AndrewHeathSuper8

What hobbies do you have?

Designing is my hobby.  I’ll get done with “work” and stop designing to go design stuff for fun.
