First revealed at E3 with this gorgeous trailer, the next-gen Mortal Kombat X was available hands on at Fan Expo and it is bone breaking beautiful and may be even more fun to play than the original.
NetherRealms brought new life to the stale Kombat franchise with last year’s reboot Mortal Kombat and they don’t seem to be content with just releasing the same game with updated graphics for their next entry. The game is the best looking next-gen game I’ve seen running , second only to The Order 1886.
Not that you will be able to pay much attention, but the backgrounds are lush and dynamic – you can now use objects in the arena against your opponent like Injustice. A sadistic amount of detail has gone into the character models – body parts and clothes become battered and blood spattered as the rounds wear on.
In particular, X-Ray attacks are back and the team has put a shocking amount of detail into making sure you feel every blow. As Kotal Kahn’s sword stabbed through Cassie Cage’s neck, we look in on the pierced spine. He begins to push on the sword and the vertebrates start to crack and finally pop with a horrible sound.

Not to be outdone, Cassie has learned some tricks from her dad. She throws a flurry of punches before dropping to her knees and bringing a crushing uppercut below the belt. A sickening pop that ensures Kahn will be singing soprano for the rest of his life.
I can only imagine what they are dreaming up for the fatalities.
The biggest change to the gameplay comes with the choice of three fighting styles for each character. Each with its own combos and specials that changes the moves and appearance. Scorpion, for instance, has a Ninjutsu style that comes with two back mounted katanas he can use to dish out some punishment. His Hellfire style meanwhile adds some extra fire power to his attacks and he has smoldering aura for the fight. This adds a ton of depth and complexity to the game, lets just hope the team keeps things balanced.
A New Challenger Approaches
Of the eight playable characters, four were returning favorites Raiden, Scorpion, Sub Zero, and Kano. The other four are completely new characters to the series. After blowing through the story of the original three MK games, the studio seems to be blazing their own trail through the convoluted Kombat mythos. Ya know, for the people out there who ‘only play it for the story’.
The 4 new characters are the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade – Cassie Cage. The hulking Mayan god Kotal Kahn. The poisonous insectoid D’vorah, and the Biggie Smalls combo of Ferra and Tor. The designs were unique and fun to play, although no word yet on DLC characters like Skarlet and Freddy Kruger will be returning.
I only played two matches, but like anyone who has ever fought Scorpion – I am hooked. Mortal Kombat X will be released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2015.
It has to be better than this…
